As our financial planning firm grew, John Dougherty also managed a CPA and tax firm for many years. Over that period, John extensively assisted clients with tax planning. He continues to be credentialed as a Certified Public Accountant, and as such, is required to annually participate in 40 hours of continuing education, including changing tax laws, so that he is up-to-date on the ever-complex tax code.
The firm works with clients to:
Minimize capital gains and other taxes
Reduce taxes on social security income
Help legally and intelligently gift assets to heirs and others
A common problem many investors see when they move their assets to a new advisor is the wholesale selling of “old” securities so that the new advisor can collect commission on buying “new” securities. The result for the client is often an ugly capital gains tax surprise the following April 15th. This doesn’t happen at Dougherty Investment Advisors. Because we receive no commission for selling products, we can objectively evaluate the client’s tax situation and strategically buy and sell securities in the best interest of our client.
